WW II Women’s Voices Heard at Minnesota Fringe Festival

In My War:  From Bismarck to Britain and Back, a young widow’s overseas letters and a Midwest matron’s diary open a door to life during World War II as a baby boomer discovers two remarkable women: her mother and grandmother. From rationing at home to running Red Cross Aero Clubs for “the boys” in Europe, they meet the challenges of a time that changed the world.  Excerpted from the book, My War:  From Bismarck to Britain and Back, edited by Christine C. Woods, this performance is the true story of a North Dakota family.

On July 31, the opening day of the Minnesota Fringe Festival, a 20-minute version of My War:  From Bismarck to Britain and Back will be presented to the 492nd Bomb Group Association, whose 2008 reunion will be held in Bloomington, Minnesota. Ruth Register Coleman, now 91, ran a Red Cross Aero Club in support of the 492nd Bomb Group in 1944 and her letters home are the heart of My War:  From Bismarck to Britain and Back. Mrs. Coleman and her daughter, Christine C. Woods, plan to attend the reunion and the opening performance of My War:  From Bismarck to Britain and Back at the Minnesota Fringe Festival.

Adapted and performed by local storytellers Dorothy Cleveland, Ann Kilgore Reay and Sara Boyle Trautner, My War:  From Bismarck to Britain and Back began as a presentation for “A Salute to Veterans” at Northstar Storytelling League’s Tellabration!ä in November 2006. It was expanded for the Fringe of the 2007 Northlands Storytelling Network Conference.

“As storytellers we are honored to give voice to the words of these women who recorded their experiences of the war, in the moment, doing their best through loss and danger, day by day,” said Sara Boyle Trautner, who presents excerpts of Ruth’s letters in My War:  From Bismarck to Britain and Back.
